The Houston Tennis Association has distributed college scholarships totaling $26,750 to 24 greater Houston area high school graduates.
The students received sums from $1,000 to $2,250. In addition to HTA contributions, money for the scholarships has been provided by the HTA/NJTL (for a National Junior Tennis and Learning participant), the National Senior Women’s Clay Court Championships (for a young woman), the Steve Wolford Memorial Scholarship Fund, Sean Rudolph Memorial Scholarship Fund, World Oilman’s Tennis Tournament Scholarship Fund, CSE W-Industries Excellence Scholarship, the Copperfield Racquet Club Scholarship, Houston Ladies Tennis Association, West Houston Ladies Tennis Association and the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship Scholarship.
Students who received the grants and their high schools and college destinations are Mallory Marie Barrios (Barbers Hill, Texas A&M), Sonya Valentine Bhakthavachalam (Klein, University of Texas), Daniel Giovanni Botello (J. Frank Dobie, University of Houston), Lauren Chen (Cypress Woods, Texas A&M), Kaitlyn Clark (Cypress Creek, Brigham Young), Micah Nicole Denny (Barbers Hill, Texas State), Lynnette Dickey (Magnolia, Texas Tech), Andrew David Gaikema (Cinco Ranch, Case Western Reserve), Samantha Renee Glaize (Sterling, University of Texas), Daniel James Green (Conroe, Texas A&M), Eva Jacobs (Memorial, Northwestern), Lydia Lillian Mireles (Cypress Creek, (University of Texas), Dylan Payne (Cypress Ranch, Rensselaer Polytechnic), Bryan Pena (Morton Ranch, Texas A&M), Kelly Peters (Langham Creek, Texas A&M), Theresa Pham (Taylor, University of Texas), Liliana Sandoval (Northbrook, University of Houston), Varun Thachil (Cypress Ranch, Case Western Reserve), Vanna Quynh-Mi Do (Klein, University of Texas), Leilani Vargas (Dobie, University of Texas), Amy Wang (Cinco Ranch, Rice), Wyatt Watson (Magnolia West, Texas Tech), Ashlyn Way (Houston Christian, Samford) and Albert Xia (Jersey Village, University of Texas).
All 24 students played either varsity tennis for their high school teams, participated in NJTL or in local USTA tournaments.
The HTA has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarship funds to deserving high school seniors since 1992.
