Champ juniors begin competition Saturday

HTA has named the top seeds in the eight age divisions of the HTA Championship Major Zone tournament, which will be held July 8-9. Six of the top seeded players are from the Houston area.

The USTA-sanctioned tournament, a major zone for championship players who are competing to achieve super championship status, has accepted 343 entries. The juniors will compete at five area sites, with headquarters at Lee LeClear Tennis Center, 9506 S. Gessner.

The No. 1 seeds in the boys championship divisions are: 18s—Jacob Brooks of Forney; 16s—Richard Zhu of Houston, Anthony Nguyen of Richmond and Silas Sandles of Waxahachie; 14s—Jenks Currie of Amarillo and Christian Potter of Corpus Christi; and 12s—Dave of Baytown.

Championship girls top seeds are: 18s—Nicole Barron of Houston; 16s—Maura Mitchell of Friendswood and Flora He of Austin; 14s—Sanjana Karnam of Sugar Land and Megan Zeng of Austin; and 12s—Taisia of Garden Ridge.

In addition to Lee LeClear, matches will be held at Homer Ford and Memorial Park tennis centers, Lost Forest Tennis Club and Ridge Point High School.
